“If I didn’t have Medicaid, I wouldn’t have been able to see a therapist and get mental health treatment. I’d probably be dead.”

Tom was a successful insurance agent with a college degree and a six-figure salary. He owned his business and his home.

But when he tragically lost his parents to a car accident and his sister to cancer in the span of 16 days, things spiraled. Afflicted with mental health issues, Tom lost everything. He moved into a homeless shelter.

Tom applied for Medicaid, which covered therapy to treat his post-traumatic stress disorder and kidney cancer treatment. He is now back on his feet, working full-time at a local grocery store and living in his own apartment.

“If I didn’t have Medicaid, I wouldn’t have been able to see a therapist and get treated for my mental health,” Tom said. “Because of Medicaid, for the first time in 20 years, I am happy.”
